Greenpeace are reporting a story on E.On's plans to build the first new coal fired power station in the UK for thirty years. You might recognise the name E.On, they are one of the UK's larger utility companies with an advertising budget to match. You know, all those ads featuring wind turbines(1), energy efficient show homes(1) and even a dedicated site for the green minded football fan(2). Oh and their website includes the following statement
"We accept the science of climate change and through our own initiatives and in partnership with Government and other stakeholders we are working to reduce our impact."(3)
E.On is also the company that "dictates the government['s] climate policy" (Greenpeace, 2008). If your name is John Hutton (yes that would be Gordon Browns business minister) than you're E.On's b****. So while E.On is the UK's biggest greenhouse polluter(4), and the government is offering up its privates for inspection by the sooty fingered folk at the giant utilities consider this; on hearing that the government were going to withhold approval for their coal fired plans E.On fired off an email to poor John Hutton claiming that "[he] has no right to withhold approval" for Carbon Sooty's plans. Adding that the government should not try to impose any conditions on it's (Carbon Sooty's) plans to dominate the production of CO2 in the UK. Within six minutes Carbon Sooty received the following "Thanks. I won't include [any conditions]." Anyhoo, you can read the full story here (includes links to the emails).
