Organic is better says EU backed study

Organic food is of higher nutritional value according to an EU backed study. The four year Quality Low Input Food study cost 12 million pounds and casts serious doubts on whether the Food Standard Agency is right to continue its neutral stance towards the benefits of organic foods.

The study shows that there is a greater nutritional benefit to eating organic foods, particular milk. According to the study up to 60 percent more antioxidants and desirable fatty acids are contained in organic milk than in conventionally produced milk.

Professor Carlo Leifert the study's co-ordinated said:
"We have shown there are more of certain nutritionally desirable compounds and less of the baddies in organic foods, or improved amounts of the fatty acids you want and less of those you don't want."

However, the FSA remains reluctant to endorse the benefits of organic agriculture, fearing a backlash from agri-business.

The study was conducted on adjacent organic and conventional farms across Europe over a period of four years and included the growing of fruit and vegetables and the rearing of cattle.
