Acceptable level of GM contamination of organic produce raised to 0.9%
In the May edition of our newsletter we reported on the positive news that the European Parliament had set the lowest possible threshold for GM contamination of organic food to 0.1%. http://www.terramar.co.uk/page/newsletter/genetic-modification-and-bees/ However, in June the European Union Council of Agriculture Ministers voted to return this level back to its previous height of 0.9%. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/07/807&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

This is a considerable blow to both GM-free and organic producers and consumers alike who do not want the integrity of their organic products undermined by decisions such as this. With uncertainty as to the effects of the consumption of GMOs, EU citizens do not want to consume GM foods and are even willing to pay a premium for non-GM foods and foods produced organically.

BBC journalist Alan Johnston Freed
Alan Johnston, the BBC Gaza correspondent, has been released after 114 days in captivity. He was handed over to members of the Hamas led Islamist movement that currently controls Gaza. He is expected to return to the UK later today.

The kidnap of Alan Johnston by the Army of Islam (the Palestinian Dugmush clan) led to a sustained campaign by local and international journalists to free him and to highlight the increasing threat to journalists operating in so called danger zones.

Best wishes
Peter and Tom
