Richard Branson touts green tech prize

Richard Branson has offered a prize of $25 million (£12.7m) to develop a technology to suck CO2 from the atmosphere. The Virgin Earth Challenge is intended to spur the "world's brightest brains". The prize has been backed by Al Gore and senior NASA scientist Jim Hansen. The money will go to whoever develops a cost effective, environmentally friendly way to remove at least one billion tonnes of CO2 a year from the atmosphere.

The 25 million dollar question being asked by Richer Branson could be best answered by the great man. Stop this space tourism nonsense before it's started, and cut back on air travel. Let's face it, there's no silver bullet, no wonder cure, and a tiny wad of cash (as Jeremy hardy said on last Fridays News Quiz "that's about four pence") isn't going to provide a panacea to anything. Richard Branson's puny prize fund, or the government's road pricing scheme are mere slights of hand. We need serious intent from politicians and business leaders alike.
